The fight for space between pedestrians and vendors might soon be resolved as the city has pinpointed a place where vendors can vend without fear of apprehension from authorities.
City mayor Mauricio Domogan has approved the use of Athletic Bowl as site in conducting ‘night market activities’ in the city.
‘This is already a window of opportunity for them to conduct their business at night, I hope that they will grab this chance’, Domogan said.
Administrative order No. 40 specifically authorizes the conduct of an experimental night market inside the cemented pavement of the Baguio Athletic Bowl.
Products which are authorized to be sold are; woven materials, silver crafts, small handicrafts, communication gadgets, RTWs and wagwag items, artifacts, gift items, indigenous products, dry goods, preserved food, fruits and vegetables, handy tools, small and light weight hardware, electrical and electronic items.
Finger foods, burgers, hotdogs will be allowed on limited basis only while wet goods, meat, fish, illegally acquired goods, pirated CDs, DVDs, counterfeit or imitation products, cigarettes and intoxicating beverages are not allowed.
Vendors are expected to maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the area with garbage properly packed and segregated for pick-up by the city’s garbage trucks.
Minimal fees will be collected by personnel of the Treasury Office.
Those who violate rules and regulations will immediately be expelled and be barred from participating in the future.
Though vendors say, there are no prospective customers at the Athletic Bowl due to its location and its lack of illumination, Domogan stressed, ‘the city will continue to improve the lighting system in the area to resolve the issue’.
The mayor also added, ‘starting a venture is at first hard but if everyone cooperates, it will surely benefit the majority, vendors and residents alike’.
The ‘experimental’ activity started last March 26 and will end on May 31 slated from 6:00 pm to midnight.
In case the area will be used for other activities prioritized by the city, night market operations will be suspended.
Vending at Harrison Road, Magsaysay Area and other parts of the CBD is prohibited.
Meanwhile, authorities will strictly implement anti-illegal peddling drives city wide.(PR,Baguio City PIO//PIA CAR)
